We had an ultrasound today to check on our little Avery. She is weighing in at around 5lbs and her head is measuring at 35 weeks, which means that she has a slightly large head, thus big brains...that makes me feel better because for those of you who have been around me lately and have been subject to me not being able to finish a complete thought (I swear my brain doesn't work) this is just proof that my intelligence is going straight to her! Her head is already pointed due south and is positioned nicely. Today was supposed to be our last ultrasound prior to her arrival but we discovered we will be having another one in three weeks. It is important for everyone to know that as of now everything is alright, however we found out that the umbilical cord only has one vein and one artery (fyi - normal cords have two arteries and one vein.) So, after asking a bunch of questions, measuring blood flow, heartbeat and going over each and every body part confirming we are indeed having a little girl, we now know that at some point between our last ultrasound in September and now, one of the arteries has disappeared (I had 2 arteries and 1 vein to start with). The doctors said that this happens in less than 1% of cases and usually means that there should be other signs of either a chromosome defect or heart issues. Again, all of the tests show that the chromosomes are normal and the heart is pumping steady and strong. The best example the doctors used to explain it to us was that of a kidney donor, i.e. their body is able to produce and function with only one kidney instead of two. So... this means that the one artery that is there is working and working well. We are just asking for your prayers until her arrival in the next few weeks. Thank you!!!
